Airport
Nadi International Airport (NAN) is situated 9km north of Nadi town.

Average Temperatures
Tropical. There are two main seasons. The wet, summer season runs from December to March, and the drier, cooler season from April to November.

Costal winter daytime temperatures average 25-26°C and are seldom lower than 20°C overnight. Costal summer daytime temperatures average 30°C and are generally no lower that 23°C overnight. The water temperature is 25°C to 29°C all year.

Clothing
Lightweight tropical clothing. Wraparound sulus (sarong) are worn by both men and women and are ideal for wearing over swimsuits and shorts or with T-shirts. It is offensive to wear brief clothing outside the resorts. It is also customary to remove headgear before visiting a village to avoid insult.

Communication
The international country IDD code for Fiji is 679. There are no area codes. International services including telephone, telex, facsimile, internet and email services, and mobile cellular phone network through Vodafone.

Currency
The unit of currency in Fiji is the Fijian dollar

Culture
Certain rules of etiquette must be observed when visiting a village. Modest dress is required and it is a good idea to carry a wraparound sulu (also known as a sarong, lavalava or pareu) to cover up brief clothing. Hats should not be worn in a village as this is an insult to the chief and it is also insulting to touch someone's head. Shoes must not be worn in people's houses.

Driving
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road with a maximum speed limited in built-up areas is 50km/hr and 80km/hr on the highways. Be aware of wandering stock, animals sleeping on the warm road surface, speed bumps in villages and pedestrians, particularly at night when visibility is poor. The legal driving age is 17 years. Rental cars are available on the mainland. Parking meter wardens are vigilant with a parking ticket costing F$20.00.

Electricity
The electrical currency in Fiji is 240 volts, AC 50hz. Fiji has 3-pin power outlets like New Zealand and Australia. Leading hotels and resorts offer power outlets for 240v or 110v shavers, hair dryers, etc.

Food
Fijian, Indian, Chinese and European food are all part of Fijian cuisine, reflecting the many ethnic groups represented in Fiji. Seafood is a main part of the Fijian diet, often cooked in lolo (coconut milk). Island nights at many of the hotels and resorts feature food traditionally cooked in an earth oven (lovo) and served buffet style, accompanied by traditional entertainment. Island nights also include a kava drinking ceremony and a meke (song and dance).

Health
There are hospitals located in most towns, and private medical services are also available. Fiji is free from malaria and most tropical diseases.

Religion and Churches
Visitors will see Christian churches, Mosques, Sikh and Hindu temples in the towns and countryside. The majority of Fijians are of the Wesleyan persuasion. Visitors are welcome at Sunday worship throughout the Fiji Islands.

Shopping
Some bargaining is still conducted but most shops have fixed prices. Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, resorts, shops and car rental companies. Cards include American Express, Diners Club, Visa, MasterCard and JCB International, In general, business hours are Monday to Thursday 8am to 5pm, and Fridays until 6pm. On Saturday, hours are 8am to 1pm.

Taxes
All purchases in Fiji attract a 12.5% VAT charge. The price charged is generally inclusive of VAT unless stated otherwise.

Time
12 hours ahead of GMT (sharing the timezone with New Zealand) and 20 hours ahead of US Pacific Time.

Water
In cities, resorts and urban area, water is safe to drink.

Visa and Entry Requirements
For nationals of 108 countries no visa is required to enter Fiji, however your passport must be valid for three months more than your intended stay in Fiji. Nationals of the other countries require pre-arranged visas that can be applied for at the nearest Fiji High Commission. Check www.fiji.org.nz, www.immigration.gov.fj, or www.bulafiji.com for a full exemption listing and visa application forms. Four-month entry visa are for holiday purpose only. Business purpose visas are issued for 14 days. Passports must be valid for a minimum of three months beyond the intended duration of stay.

Language
English, Fijian and Hindustani are also widely used in Fiji. Fijians will speak Fijian between themselves, but all are proficient in English and will always speak English to visitors.
Visitors rapidly become familiar with the word 'Bula', Fiji's traditional greeting.

Duty Free!

If you only fly to get duty free cigarettes and tobacco it is a lot cheaper on the way IN to Fiji than on the way out, and is about half the price of New Zealand or Australia.*

There is plenty of duty free shopping once in the departure lounge of Nadi Airport including alcohol, jewellery, clothing, souvenirs, sweets, electronics, toys and more. There are also plenty of bargains to be found!
